    Posted: 02 Jun 2011 at 7:40am
I have a report with 2 columns in the detail sections.  I have multiple detail sections with sub reports in them and the detail sections can be suppressed. I want to draw a line between the columns that go all the way down the detail sections.  It should look like this:

Section 1 Record 1   |   Section 1 Record 2
Section 2 Record 1   |   Section 2 Record 2
Section 3 Record 1   |
_________________________________
Section 4 Record 1   |   Section 4 Record 2

* In this example Section 3 of record 2 is suppressed

I can get the sections to come out perfectly and line up how I want but I can't get the lines to show in any "nice" way.  If i put a line from the group header to footer I get this:

Section 1 Record 1   |   Section 1 Record 2 |
Section 2 Record 1   |   Section 2 Record 2 |
Section 3 Record 1   |
_________________________________
Section 4 Record 1   |   Section 4 Record 2 |

*This wouldn't be so bad if the line didn't break on the Suppressed section for record 2.

Please supply any idea's you think may be helpful.

Use your "Can Grow" option on the line and in the footer draw a hor line with the line ends like a table and it should add the lines to all your detail sections.

Make sure when you create the line you start in the group header and end in the same group footer. ie. Don't start in group header 1 and end in group header 2.

Also check if you have "Extend to Bottom of Section when Printing" in the line formatting selected.

Thanks for your replies.  Unfortunately both options didn't work.

After some more investigation I found that this is actually whats going on.  We have grouping on the Sections and when it starts the next group Crystal wants to start the next group at the same vertical position (which i want) but i adds a blank area in the 2nd column because its not as big as the first. I can not control that blank area (to my knowledge) so i can do background coloring or lines and it just creates a stupid blank area.  It seems columns don't support multiple sections very well.

The only option I can think of is to add a section that will fill the 2nd column with additional blank lines till its the same size as the first column which would really take a lot of coding and be difficult to maintain.

Do you want to color the columns or the horizontal lines?I can give you some formulas that will color either every other line or every 2 lines like a green bar.
