Hi Tobin,

Thanks for your interest in participating in the forum! If you want a free book, all you have to do is be active. If you see a question or two you know the answer to, just post your response. I keep up with everything going on and I see everyone who is helping to make this forum great. I've already given away five books to members who have been extremely helpful for others needing advice. As the forum grows and more members help each other out, this will be a great resource for everyone using Crystal Reports!

Hey Brian,

I have a similar problem to Randy, in that I have been requested to manage a project which involves a lot of crystal report work and while I had some training a few years years back I would very much like access to your free resources to sharpen up.
Thanks
Bob

Hi Brian,

I'm new to the board as well and posted a thread on where a beginner can get online training and sent you a pm.  I just saw this thread and would be interested in the book too.

I'll be interviewing for a position in which I need to know Crystal Reports and I've never used it before.   My interview will be next week.

Any help would be appreciated from anyone.  I really want this job!

Thanks,
Susan

Susan-
The help would depend on what part or role you are being asked to play - If you are going after building reports - then you will probably not be able to learn enough fast enough to pass a technical interview, but the basics of query data, joins, and formating would put you in good stead - talk to that
- If you are doing reporting - then CR  (or the BO Variants) is just a tool, a mechanism to get the data - the real challenge is the knowledge of the data - where is it, how do you collect it (is the data model 'walkable'?) {ie if there are many to many joins in the path - you will play He$% trying to get a good result} - and do you know the data - that is do you understand the nuances of say an assigned job versus a temp job when you are reporting on JOBS as there would be 3 answers to the question - SHOW me JOBS for people?
You can learn the details of CR over time and what I've seen on this site is a great help (I've found many gems hidden throughout it) - Demo in the interview you know REPORTING if you want the job or you understand the BUSINESS that is needing the reports -
Pardon me if I offend anyone and spare me the flame mail - but CR is just a tool to do reports - We used to have arguments when orgs would change from MSword to or from Word Perfect - the learning was in doing word processing (knowing hanging paragraphs, and tabs (as opposed to Hard return and spaces) - learning how Word or WP did it was easy if you knew what you had to do.  That is overly simplistic, but knowing how to make (get the data, and the right data) , format (make it readable and look good), and timliness (down and dirty is sometimes way better than pretty.....and late) should be why they hire you - impress that on them - then buy the book when you get the job and solve problems
My 2 cents

I'll agree with Rich here.

I got my current position developing Crystal Reports having never touched them before.  But, I know the heck out of SQL, and I'd done a lot of reporting in Access.  The SQL knowledge helped me build really powerful reports out of the gate (admittedly, all the power was in the query, and the report was just showing the final data set).  The Access knowledge meant I had some idea how to lay out reports nicely for easy reading.  The combination is about 80% of making reports right there.

I read Brian's earlier book on Crystal programming (as part of my task originally was to wrap these all in a .Net app).  I read the heck out of the help file (admittedly, Crystal does not have the best help file, but you have to start somewhere).  I cruised forums like this one (though, again, Crystal has some of the worst user forums of any major software product I've ever used, present company excluded Sleepy ).

Personally, I'd look around for Learning Tree or the like.  They generally have very good Intro to Crystal classes.  Their advanced classes are generally pretty thin on the ground, but you may not need those.

Hey Everyone,
My Name is Chris and I recently started working at a Law school doing reporting for them and statistics as well. I was just introduced to reporting programs (specifically Crystal) last month when I got here, and I really have fun while making reports now that I've learned how to use the damn thing. hehe
I bought Brian's book along with the manual and have read through it. I am thinking about asking them to buy me the other books that he has so I can have them, but I am not sure if they will buy them all for me.
Anyways, I'll start checking these forums periodically now that I know they exist. Thanks a bunch!

Let me make the decision easy for you -
If your a IT specialist and you are going to make a living doing reports - you need the tools - If they won't buy them, do it your self (think of it as investing in your next bonus) - BTW it is deductable as unreimbursed employee expenses {no limit} as is anything you need to do your job (supplies, computer gizmos, software, anything job related your company does not pay for - keep receipts)

Simply stated - you do a great job, meeting the needs of your customer - they think you are irreplaceable and will write you 'atta-boy' letters and get you a raise, bonus etc -
What are you waiting for - order today

I am doing Crystal with Blackbaud DB and relations are not in the same order for each student. How extensive is the formula to get Father, Mother, Emergency Contact, Agency, or Consultant to go in the right field with their phone and Email?
