What is the preferred method for updating subreports in a main report?

I'm going partially insane trying to keep subreports up to date.  I've tried the following methods:

  • Open main report > Expand subreport > update subreport > Save subreport as > Save Main report
  • Open subreport > update subreport > save subreport > Open main report > re-import subreport > save main report
  • Open subreport > update subreport > save subreport > Open main report > remove subreport > insert newly updated subreport > save main report
Trying each of these methods, i get a myriad of results.  I will either end up with expected results, or an non-updated subreport.  Sometimes the update will take and days later an old non-updated subreport shows up again.  I would appreciate any advice on successful methods.

Using CR 2008, thx Anthony

Do you need to keep updated versions of your subreports separately?
Once you have inserted a subreport in the main report, it becomes part of it, and any amendments will be saved when you save the main report.
I have some generial subreports I have put  in several reports, but they have to be linked and often slightly amended for the particular report.

I just keep one version of each subreport.  Once I update it, it remains as it's sole version to the main report.

With your point to save the main report to save amendments to the subreports... What is your method of updating and saving the subreport?  Do you do it from the main report or are you only working with the subreport?  None of my subreports are linked btw.

Are you using CR 8.0? In 8.5 you can set to either globally update subreports when opening a main report OR update a specific subreport when opening a main report.

For the setting up on a specific report, Click on the subreport. Go to Format>Format Subreport. Click the subreport tab. Check off "Re-import when opening". The current subreport will be updated when the main report is opened and refreshed.

For setting it globally, go to File>Options. Click the New Report tab. Check box "Re-import subreport when opening reports". Click OK. Any subreport will be updated when its main report is opened and refreshed.

Not absolutely sure if these same options are available in 8.0, but it's worth a check.

Is this what you are needing?
