    Posted: 02 Sep 2008 at 2:14am
Hi All,

I have a report that has been build by someone else. When I try to run the report I get an error because a Formula Field is trying to call a User Defined Function.

My problem is that I can't see the Formula Filed in the Filed Explorer when I'm in design mode. I only see it after klicking OK in the error message and I get into "debugging mode".

What to do?

Best Regards,

Hi again,

Is it possible to hide formulas in CR-designer? In that case; how can I unhide them?

Magnus,

I have not used Custom Functions but according to Brian Bischof in his book Crystal Reports Encyclopedia, Volume 1:

"Custom functions can't be used on their own (i.e. dragged and dropped onto a report).  They have to be called from a formula.  Since they can't be displayed directly on a report, you won't find them listed in the Field Explorer window.  They are only listed within the Formula Worship window under the Custom Functions category".

For more info you might want to refer to his book at page 263.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your reply!

The problem is that I can't see it under Custom Functions or Additional Functions or under any category. Still there is a formula called 'Display String' that calls the User Defined Function. I can't find 'Dispaly String' formula anywhere.

Is there a possibility to see and/or change the reports code as you could do in "the early days" of Crystal Reports?

See pp 272-275 of Brian Bischof's book Volume 1, Crystal Reports Encyclopedia for all the details.  To paraphrase:

"Go thru the process you would for creating a new formula in the Formula Fields list.  When the Formula Workshop box appears, you will see a menu item which looks like a magic wand.  That's the Use Expert/Editor button.  Click on it.  In place of the 3 report tree windows you will see Custom Function, Summary, and Function Arguments."

Brian goes into much more detail in his book on what occurs once you click on the Use Expert/Editor button.

Did you know that you can buy his book as an "eBook".  In the interest of your sanity -- I'd suggest that you buy it in the "eBook" format to get thru this process and then buy the hard copies as well.  I find both formats handy for a variety of reasons.

Anyway -- give that a go!

Magnus,

See earlier reply this a.m.  But another thought!Lamp   Do you know what field that this "Display String" is addressing?  If so, you might try going into the Design screen and  right clicking on the field in question.  Choose Format Field; click on the Common tab and see if the formula button next to "Display String" is red.  If so, click on the button and examine the underlying formula.  It might be as simple as that.  For your sake, I hope so.

Embarrassed
