sounds like a SQL error or some other incongruity in the data. I have seen this before, but it has been a couple of years, and as I recall, it was data related.

Sounds like a problem with the DB itself. If you or a DBA can run a query from it (similiar to what you are trying to get for the report), then it will be easier to determine where the issue is.
