    Posted: 19 Jun 2007 at 5:58am

I have a report with 2 groups and a detail section, it only finally shows the group footers which hold assorted summaries and totals.

It is based on (among others) two tables with dates covering various periods, I only want to include the data in the summaries if the date parameters chosen are within criteria in both tables. The subreport uses a running count as a trigger for acceptance of a record in one table which is then compared with the other.

The problem is that this subreport has to be placed in the group header of the inner group, to make the calculations work. So it then appears about 100 times in the report. Even if I hide the rows within the subreport, and make it as small as possible, I still end up with 2 or 3 blank pages in the whole report.

I can't hide or suppress the subreport, if I do, I get zeros back.

Any ideas or explanations?

Don't hide or suppress the subreport. Instead, suppress each SECTION of the subreport. On the subreport properties select 'Suppress blank subreport'. Then on the main report put the subreport in its own section and  set the property Suppress Empty Section. That should get you in the right direction.

Thanks, but it doesn't work.Ouch  I had suppressed all the subreport sections already, so I tried suppressing blank sections as you said. But they don't get suppressed, I suppose because they are not really blank.
Is this something that changes with versions, though. We are still using 8.5 here, trying hard to convince management we really have to upgrade.
And yes, I know this forum is for 9 and above, but where else can I ask Confused

Hmmm. You might be right about it being only 9 and later. I don't know exactly when they implemented it. Sorry.

However, the CR XI is a huge improvement over CR 8.5. Upgrading is highly recommended. Good luck with eventually swaying them.

Oh yeah - one other thing. Since you can't do what I recommended, use the Overlay Section option for the previous section. That way the subreport section won't take any extra space since the previous section will be put on top of it (no problem since it is empty anyway). That should work!

In 8.5 it is Underlay, and that doesn't work either. This section (Group header A) just insists on appearing no matter what I do. Except suppressing or hiding, which stops the subreport data being displayed further down. It is really frustrating.
Oh well, they'll just have to export it to Word and delete all the section breaks there before they print   Disapprove
We will only be upgrading to 10 when we do, the  company that provides the software we write reports for, which uses a runtime version embedded for users, only supports v9, because they haven't got v11 to work with it yet. We know 10 is ok, we've tried it out with a demo.
Thanks for your help anyway
