I have a appllication using a reports build in 8.5-9 version.I wanted to change these reports wit ver. 11, but the appllication won't open them, beacuse the saving text message:

Owerwriting the file will prevent it from being open by any version of Crystal Reports prior to version 9.

I don't have verision 9, is there some option in version 11 to save reports to older version, or is there a translator?

As it has been explained to me,  v.11 reports are limited in their backward compatibility to v.9.

You could run the report in v11 and then save the output to another format such as .pdf or .rtf.  for distribution. If that is not a good solution you may want to try the Crystal Report Viewer which is a utility viewing program available for FREE from Business Objects. I believe it was designed and released to allow a wider distribution of reports in circumstances such as yours.

Hope this helps

There were MAJOR changes to the structure of the actual .rpt file with version 9.  9, 10, and XI do not have any way of saving files so that they are readable by earlier versions.  So, you'll need to either make your report changes in 8.5, update the application to use the new report controls (they'll read/run earlier report versions), or use a different viewer for the updated reports.

I think that VB6 came with a version of CR 8.5 or 7.x. I forget. It is buried on the installation CD in a folder somewhere. It's not part of the main install (going off memory here from a long time ago). You also needed the pro version of VB, the basic edition doesn't have CR on the CD. If you only have 1 CD, then you might not have the pro version and thus won't have CR on the disc. But dig through the folders on the CD to double check.

As I recall, VB6 came with a CR version 4.5 which was not a public release. VB6 promoted the use of the MS Report Designer in VB6, and you had to manually installif you wanted to use it.

VS Studio 2003 came with a  the CR software v.9 of CR.

Here is the link to the free Business Object viewer if you are interested,

Here is a brief summary at this link,
---------------------------------------------
Tired of exporting to PDF, Microsoft Excel, or other formats and losing Crystal Reports functionality? This is now a thing of the past. On May 29, 2007, Business Objects launched a new beta program for a standalone Crystal reports viewer.
The new viewer enables Crystal Reports users to view, interact, and distribute with reports in the native .rpt format.
