Quote sgallet Replybullet Topic: Changing the group name (problem)
    Posted: 01 Aug 2007 at 10:28am
I have a report using 2 tables: accounts and users
Accounts are related to users (who create them), I need a list of accounts grouped by the users who created them.

I can group the accounts by the 'CreatedBy' field in the accounts table, but that's a long ID# which is useless to me (I don't know who that refers to...).
If I try to change the group name by selecting the new group name field to be the 'Full Name' field in the User table, the report shows nothing..... ?????????  Angry

Can I only change the group name to a field in the same table, or do I have to link the fields in the database expert?????

Any ideas?

I'm confused when you ask if you have to link the fields in the database expert. Do you have two unlinked tables?

Nonetheless, yes the two tables must be joined in the Database Expert. If the report works when you group on ID, then I would leave that as the group field, but then display the FullName field in the group header. That way the report groups correctly and you see data that makes sense.

If you need to sort by the name (sorting by ID probably won't make sense to most users....), you'll have to link from the CreatedBy field to the correspoinding field in the User table.  Then you should be able to group by the user name and still have your data.

Thank you!!!!!  The default link was from systemID to SystemID, I needed CreatedBy to SystemID, changed that, and then changed the Group Name to display by FullName and it WORKS!
thank you again Clap i'm just learning this.

As I like to say, SmartLinking isn't smart.  I ALWAYS turn it off and set up my own links between tables.
