I am trying to group and sort by a varchar date that has an erratic format such as this:

Hire Date
1/1/2016
12/5/2016
11/12/2016
2/12/2016

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was thinking of creating formula fields and they sort on those....but don't know if that would work.

I would convert it to a date data type and use that result for sorting and/or grouping

date(table.field)
