Brian,
Do you need to get permissions from the company that owns the software, like the company that owns Crystal reports, to publish screen shots. etc in you books?
Is there any other permissions you need to get to write about a software product owned by another company?
Thank you for you help. I've read your self-publishing web pages and really appreciate the time you have taken in doing that.

I haven't seen anywhere that you have to get permission from anyone. It appears to be public domain knowledge. That said, at the beginning of every book is usually a list of the companies that you used screen shots from and you acknowledge them there.
