I don't know what EMR is, but if it is reporting related the biggest concept in reporting, I think, is how to get everything you need to display/report on, on 1 row of data. That is how all the reporting systems work. They basically won't ask the database a second time based an answer in your data. So, if you have a idea of SQL or database selects or can figure out how to get all the data elements on 1 line at the same time, then the rest of report writing is not overly complex...tricky...confusing but not complex.

Most of the tricky comes in because you cannot ask the reporting system WHY it is showing the wrong value, you have to figure out if there is a way to break your logic into smaller pieces so that you can test each of your assumptions and find your error.
