I am trying to add distinct total  of students who took the end of year survey.
Right now,it shows distinct number of students but some students take multiple courses and multiple surveys and that is not getting added.
Any suggestions?

Not sure where your problem is lying.

Likely the easiest solution is to use a Running Total with a specific evaluation formula.
In data terms what is your inclusion process?

I tried the running total but not working -  it is giving me the distinct value and not counting 1 student ID with multiple courses.

So you want to count the number of instances the survey was taken or the number of people that took the survey?

Create a Running Total
Name=SurveyCount
Field to Summarize=StudentID
Type=DisinctCount
Evaluate=Use a formula
//We have to figure this out but basically you want a way to show TRUE when the survey was taken and FALSE all other times.. just guessing but will likely be something like
Table.surveyfield='2010 YearEnd survey'
//
Reset=Never
Place in Report Footer (RT's do not work inheaders)

if you want help with the formula just post 2 or 3 data rows that have both 'count' and 'exclude' and tell me why to include or exclude and I can help with your formula.
