Thanks for that explanation. That was a piece of information I was missing which now makes' sense.

However moving forward and trying again, with the subreports in the GH and also now with the added formulas (to test) and to show the shared variables, the shared variables show zero in the GH. The value of the shared variable will only show the returned value if I place it under the GH in Detail A.

Sounds right.
You can run the sub report in GH1a and place the variables in a Gh1b.
I think you do not need to display the sub report since you are displaying the results in the shared variables.
If you need to display the sub report you would want to place that in a GH1c.
To hide GH1a you must suppress all values in the sub report, under the sub report properties select suppress if blank and then in the section (GH1a) set it to suppress if blank. Sub reports do not run if just suppressed.

It would seem I've been able to get it to work. The report now prints 5 pages of exactly what I needed.
