Ok, Installed CR11 and had no resolution regarding the addition of data objects to an existing subreport.

Removed  subreport and rebuilt it. Worked ok when  initial definition of data query included new data object.
 
To bad this issue did not crop up earlier and business objects identified it as a problem and included a fix in a service pack.

I ran into this too, turns out the smart links response is correct, you have to disable it prior to adding the additional table though.
 
File -> Options -> Database -> Uncheck Automatic Smart Linking
 
After doing this then add the table, you should be able to populate the report again.

As I like to put it, Smart-linking isn't smart.  When I install a new copy of Crystal, I ALWAYS turn it off and build the links myself.
