I know of no advantages or disadvantages of using Crystal vs. Basic formulas.  I think it is personal preference and knowledge of the languages.  Part of my problem, I know both pretty well and sometimes I use the wrong syntax and it can take a few minutes for me to realize what I have wrong.

As Kevlray said, there is no difference. Crystal Reports originally had Crystal syntax only. But a lot of people learn the BASIC language and VBA in school and are familiar with it. So they added Basic syntax for people to make it easier for people who know Basic. They report treats them both the same, so it's just your personal preference.
